What To Do When God Calls

Over the past six and a half years I’ve walked with God and the storms have roared. I’ve experienced abandonment, violence, betrayal and isolation. I’ve also experienced a transcending joy, liberation, and healing. I’ve witnessed miracles and acted as a conduit for God as miracles were performed. I’ve seen tears of distress transmute into courage. I’ve witnessed darkness convert to light. I’ve experienced more situations that would beg of me to change my ways without turning back than I could have imagined and now God was calling again.

The past few weeks have been no different. God spoke and my job is to obey. My job is not to do my will, but God’s will. This time he said, “When is enough enough?” Out of fatigue, emotional turmoil and feeling out of alignment… I surrendered fully. God called me to rid myself of two things: A presence on social media and most of my material possessions. The faster I do both, the faster the actual assignment comes. Not only did God tell me to get rid of things, he commanded me to give it to the poor - not sell it.

Then he commanded for me to donate my car. Yes, not sell it - donate it. Once I am done with giving away my things, then it’s time to give away my car. He has told me that where I am going I do not need it.

75% of the world lives below poverty and in America we choose to spend money on Starbucks, name brands, multiple vehicles, expensive foods, so much booze as a country, prescription medications, healthcare, insurance for all the things… and for what? Our country has the highest rate of plastic surgery and is number 25 on the list of countries for high rates of suicide. We sit number 22 on sexual assault cases in the world. Guess who has lower suicide rates? China, Vietnam, Israel, Iraq and Turkey. How can one of the richest countries be in the top 20% of suicide and sexual assault lists?

Look even further, Australia, Switzerland and Sweden are also up in the top 50% for suicide. All are considered “healthy” and “sustainable” with an “environmental consciousness.” So why are 18% of Switzerland’s men killing themselves? What are we missing in middle class communities? Connection and service.

We are more concerned with our own individual health than the health of others. We take care of ourselves first but God says to lay down your life for others.

Look at what developed countries spend money on. It’s literally the opposite of God’s word. He says make money and GIVE it to the poor. He says sell everything and give the money away to the poor. He says to take up the cross and follow me. Where in there does God say buy more chariots or homes for ourselves? He says work with your hands so you attract others to Christ.

This is the calling. If you read this, in your heart you know it’s your calling, too. So when will you choose to let go of the things of the world and follow in his ways?
