How to: Buying a Blazer
Dress: Old Navy // Blazer: Old (like this one and this one) // Shoes: Michael Kors // Sunnies: Nine West // Purse: Coach (old, another one like it here)
I really gravitate towards preppy details. I've been that way since I was in junior high... from polo shirts to plaid... I love a preppy flair. Fall is the perfect season for structured blazers, layers and plaid. I picked up this dress over the Summer and have worn it a few times. As I was surveying my closet the other day, I realized it was the perfect mix of cream and shades of orange to compliment one of my long time favorite embroidered blazers.
That's the thing about buying things you love and that are made of good quality - you will want to keep them season over season and wear them time and time again. A blazer is an item that I get a ton of use out of for work. I like to be able to wear it over dresses for meetings or with jeans on Fridays. It also keeps me cozy when the air conditioning is blasting in the office. A few things I look for when I am picking out a blazer includes cut, fabric and lining. The cut has to be flattering and I prefer a more shrunken feel. It compliments a smaller frame better than something boxy or over-sized. If you are taller, you can probably get away with something more relaxed.
As far as fabric goes, you want it to be able to breathe. A blazer is layered over other clothing items from shells to sweaters, so take the weight and quality of the fabric in mind when you are picking one out. Finally, the lining. The lining sells me every time. I love being able to turn up the cuff to reveal a polka dot or small pattern. It really adds a special touch to an otherwise serious piece. Topping this particular look off I added pointy pumps, a doctor bag and tortoise shell sunglasses.
