How to: Layering an Olive Jacket

A cotton olive jacket is one of the best layering pieces you can have for transitional weather. It's slightly utilitarian look helps it move from casual to more preppy looking outfits. The material is breathable, but with enough weight to layer over a sweater or button up for a cool evening. Layering an olive jacket is an easy way to give a timeless piece new life and here are two strategies to getting it right:

Neutrals compliment - You can start by picking out another neutral to wear with you jacket. I wore a pair of camel colored jeans here. Then, I added a crew neck black shirt and duck boots with black trim to go along with the olive jacket. The three shirt layers give it so much depth. In the past I've done it with white shorts (see this post) and rain boots. Olive works with other neutrals like black, walnut and cream. I'd stay away from khaki since the two colors are really similar. Navy is another color that sits too close to it on the color wheel and doesn't pop the way other neutrals do.

Pick a bright color - Pink, red, and light blue all look great with olive. They are just enough brightness to pop underneath the muted up. Try a striped blue and white button up or slip on a gingham shirt to peek out of the top and on the sleeves show here. You can throw it over a flirty dress and just let the hem peek beneath or a nude sweater with cream shorts (see this post). You can also wear a bright purse and lipstick that compliments like a cherry red or ballet pink.

Even if you usually don't gravitate toward this color, you can add things you already own and get so much mileage out of this piece. Try mixing a print underneath in a brighter hue for something unexpected. Wear a pair of loafers or boots for a preppy flair and grab your favorite lipstick to keep it a little glamorous.
