3 Tips for Getting Started Decorating Your Home { Home Sweet Heel Clicks }
I am currently working on getting things together to do a final apartment reveal, but thought I would share tidbits from around the home. The design process is something I was lucky enough to be trained in for my degree. Being an interior design student gave me a skill set and working process that I've been able to apply in real life. I thought I would share a few tidbits today of how I chose a style, color scheme and began the process.
- Inspiration - I've always started by creating a visual board for any sort of art project. Lucky we now have apps like Pinterest to stay organized, but I used to cut out images from magazines and paste onto a piece of foam core board. From furnitures styles to colors to art... I collect and look for a theme to use. Not always is it literal. Sometimes it may be something like a sunset or photograph of a place in the world that really inspires. My bathroom currently has a french riveria feel with bright cabana yellow stripes.
- Colors - This is probably my favorite part. After I gather all of the things that I am currently feeling, I look for consistent colors... Do I keep picking out painted furniture? Is it something antique or modern? What about the finish? I went with a deep burgundy, pale peachy pink and sea glass green for the majority of my place. It has a lot of open space so I keep the main areas in this color.
- Style // Theme - After you have put together a board and decided on colors, what sort of style do you want? I went for a mix of shabby chic and modern. I knew that I wanted to use lots of vintage pink glass, linens and espresso hued furniture. If you decide to take a risk, put it in one room or decorate a bathroom in something bolder. That way, if you want to change it in the future - it doesn't take much of an investment.
Start gathering objects you already own and make a wish list of what you would like to find. I scoured yard sales, resale shops and flea markets to find many of the items I owned. I kept an eye out and let others know what I was looking for. Speak up! People are constantly getting rid of things in their own homes and it's a great way of finding stuff that has a lot of character.
