How to Bundle Up for the Cold When You Live in the South

Three Heel Clicks - How to Bundle Up for the Cold When You Live in the South

Pretty sure no one say record breaking temperatures coming this week. Not only did the weather temperatures plunge to the depths of the artic circle, but we’ve had snow and ice for three days in Central Texas. It’s been pretty interesting to say the least. I figured a few tips on bundling up are pretty handy right about now. Growing up my family traveled and spent time living overseas in both Germany and South Korea where Winters are long and bitter cold. I learned at an early age a few tricks to keep the muscles warm and how to combat sub zero temperatures and wind chill. Here are a few practical tips for bundling up if you live in the South.

Make sure you have a coat

Yep, you need a coat. Even if you live on the coast, get yourself a coat. I prefer a down filled  or wool one for the best warmth. The longer the better! You can also look for a belted one that will allow you to cinch up the waist and keep the cold air away from the middle of the body. No matter where you live, have a coat. I even bring a coat on many of my trips when the temperatures could swing to being a little chilly. You don’t have to go all out and fill a whole closet with them, just make sure every person in your family has one to wear that fits. For kiddos, you can order a size up so they fit for more than one season. It’s better to have extra room than not enough.

Layer your pants

Another trick is to layer tights or leggings underneath your pants. Believe it or not this makes a HUGE difference. If you want to take it once step further you can do long johns or wool tights. I have found the natural fabrics breathe better but keep warmth in. You can wear underneath your jeans, sweatpants or if you have snow pants for additional warmth. Also makes it easy to undress your outer layers when you walk in your door.

Cover your ears

Another thing I’ve found is that when your head is warm, your body stays warmer. Grabbing a cute beanie or pair of ear muffs helps you stay warm during icy days. I bought a few of my winter hats on Amazon and have one in navy and white. I also love wearing my ear muffs for long walks or if I don’t want my hair to get flattened.

Layering vests and scarves

Keeping your core body warm helps overall body heat. I love winter puffer vests because when indoors I can keep them on without feeling constricted. They also make a great fit for working out or going on a run on chilly days. Scarves are probably my favorite winter accessory and will warm you up in no time! The thicker, the better on snow days. You can learn to tie them in a variety of ways but I promise they really make a difference! When I get hot, sometimes I remove the coat and just wear a vest and scarf with my beanie.

Two pairs of socks with knee high boots

If you don’t have a pair of wool skiing socks, then doubling up your socks will help keep your feet warm. Most of us in the South don’t keep snow friendly boots on hand but have work boots or rain boots which double as a winter shoe when you add the insulation of a good pair or two of socks. Hunter makes the best all weather shoe I can find and tend to last longer than other brands I’ve tried. I love being able to quickly slip on and off to take the dog out on rainy, snow or icy days. If you don’t have a pair of rain boots, leather riding boots or lace ups are a good alternative.
