Refresh Your Beauty Regimen
As the new year is approaching and resolutions are being made I realize that one of the best things I’ve ever done to take care of myself was to refresh my beauty regimen. A few years ago I struggled with hormonal acne. It was so incredibly tough being an adult. It affected my confidence so much. After making a few simple changes and managing my stress level I was able to improve the health of my skin and reduce problems with acne. I changed my regimen, switched to non-toxic products and implemented healthier lifestyle choices. Now I make it a point to regularly point to clear out old products and clean things out. Here are a few ways I’m refreshing my beauty regimen for the upcoming year.
Examine what you currently have in your regimen. How old are your products? Anything over a year needs to be to tossed due to the fact that most products lose their effectiveness then. Then evaluate what you have on hand and what s missing. A proper skincare regimen includes cleanser, toning, treatment products and then moisturizer. At bare minimum make sure you have a cleanser made for your skin type, toning spritz like rosewater which gently balances the pH in your skin and moisturizer to protect and nourish. If you need help building a regimen, take this five minute quiz and you’ll receive recommendations custom to your skin type and needs!
Next it’s time to go through your makeup. Old makeup is one of the worst things you can put on your body. Mascara and lash products need to be tossed at three months. Most other products need to be tossed at a year. There’s actually a small number on each makeup product with a M or Y - you can find that products recommended date of expiration .
Next up it’s time to clean your tools. Another area people often forget to regularly maintain in the beauty realm is cleaning your tools. Using non-toxic baby shampoo, dish detergent or a brush cleaner thoroughly clean each brush until there is no more residue. From that point forward set a reminder in your phone to clean your brushes once a week if you are regularly using them.
Next up, it’s time to start refilling and adding things that are missing. Begin by making a list of your must haves for everyday and then a wish list. Some of my favorite products include a hydrating skincare mask, lash primer, brightening serum and lash serum. It’s good to always have two concealers on hand - one in your skin tone and another in a lighter shade to brighten under the eyes and highlight. If you currently do not have a signature long lasting lip color, then you’ll need one. I love this color for a natural look and this one for a bold look. Lastly, a tinted moisturizer or air thin spray foundation for when you are looking for an even skin tone.
