Taking Life Slower
I’m writing this post right now in a hotel lobby in Galveston, TX. I had a little epiphany over the past few days. Usually I operate in two speeds - 100mph or zero. Jam packing my schedule, trying my hardest to cram every last activity possible into each day until I can go no longer. It’s a constant rushing in life and has driven me to panic attacks. Obviously, a person can only handle so much. I noticed as I was preparing for 10 days of travel over Spring Break that I was getting anxious and overwhelmed as I thought of my to do list prior to leaving my apartment. Instead of pushing myself, I stopped. I sat down everytime I had that feeling and did a check - Did I eat? Am I tired? What is just one thing I can do to help clear my mind? Then, after taking care of those needs I realized I could focus better on whatever task at hand.
The past few months I’ve focused so much on taking care of my body, mind and soul. From regular yoga to prayer and meditation I’ve made this year a point to find activities to ease the mind and make my life simpler. Simplicity is an interesting concept. At first it’s so hard to wrap your mind around it if you are full of a previous life where you continued at a warping speed. Simplicity requires your mind to think of one thing at a time. To take more off your plate. To teach you that less really is more quality. Yes, simplicity is rewarding, fulfilling and satisfying.

Fast forward to Saturday night this past weekend. It’s 9:30pm and my home is untidy, dishes need to be washed and no one in my home is packed in a suitcase. I decided I was so tired I couldn’t think and laid on the couch cuddling with my pup for a few minutes. I sat there with her in my arms and thought, This is what life is about. Not efficiency and results. It’s about joy. True joy in your heart. If I don’t take time to enjoy then these beautiful moments will be fleeting and I’ll miss out. I challenged myself in that moment to lay and just pet my pup Violet. Both of us on our backs on the couch doing nothing. I quickly drifted off to sleep.
I was so tired earlier that evening that my daughter asked me if I had a nap that afternoon and then when I told her no she proceed to encourage me to lay down and take one. Well, it was 7pm by that point so I made her dinner and then we tucked in after our bedtime routine. I needed the rest before I could continue or I would end up stressed and panicky on Sunday. I slept hard and good for 5 hours and naturally awoke at 2:30am. Now you probably think I’m nuts, but I get up in the middle of the night often. If I’m tired later I take a nap or go back to sleep but laying around restless in my bed is frustrating. So I get up and knock a few things out.
I ended up accomplishing ALL of my to dos and we left on time. And that’s when I realized that slow and steady wins the race. See I can’t sprint for forever. I can’t run at full speed an expect the same quality in my life. I have to pace myself. Build my endurance and take breaks. I need less not more. I need one thing at a time instead of multi-tasking. I need rest. Lots of rest. Soul rest. Mind rest. Body rest.
All of this managing one thing at a time, working through without hurry and enjoying the process instead of rushing to the destination. This is still a work in progress by I can feel my mind shifting . This mind shift to a more open space mentally gives me room for patience and gratefulness with others around me. I’m carrying that philosophy through my wardrobe this year constantly evaluating if what I choose to keep suits me. If I’m purchasing something I look to for it to be made of quality and a style with feminine classic lines and shapes.
No longer do I want a disposable life, but an heirloom life. Today I’m wearing the most beautiful trench coat that’s at a great price point! I’ve been wearing it constantly since it’s chilly right now. This jacket and shoes were noted My Best Buys for Spring This Year post earlier this week. I layered it over a beautiful dress from The Royal Standard which is a wholesale company that sells to southern boutiques (found a really similar one in yellow and white here). I added slides and a straw tote for the perfect vacation look while we explored the infamous Hotel Galvez.

Fall is almost here and it’s boots season! I am so excited about all the options this season. If you’ve been following my Instagram lately, you’ll find tons of western boot styles including these black rhinestone booties and these knee-high silver ones! Every time I put either pair on I immediately feel like heading to a Taylor Swift concert. If you know… you know! I went ahead and rounded up a ton of options for you in all price points. I love pairing boots with short body con dresses like this striped one from Lillusory. It’s great for this time of year and you can throw a moto jacket on for an edgy look. Whether you are looking for glam boots or classic styles for work you’ll find everything you need below for a chic Fall update! Hope you enjoy and make sure you DM a pic when you put on a pair!
We are halfway through July and halfway through the Summer so I wanted to share a quick round up of my swimsuit collection. Where did you get that suit is one of the most frequently asked questions I get in my DM’s when I post wearing one! I love all different kinds of styles from tankinis to bikinis. A lot of the suits I’ve been wearing lately have extra support in the chest area and tummy control so you can look and feel your best when you are at the beach or the pool. Below is a list of my favorites and even more styles over on my Amazon Storefront! Enjoy and make sure to tag #threeheelclicks when you post a picture wearing one!
Yes, you heard me. This boss babe right here is intentionally going slower in life. For the first time, ever. I’ve put extra time in between tasks. I’ve taken things off my to-do list. I’ve spent the last few months asking myself what is really important. I’ve gone inward to figure out my priorities. I’ve taken tons of time to journal, reflect and pray. The thing I’ve learned is that we can become addicted to anything including activity. Next time you are wondering what you should be doing with an extra five minutes? Breathe. Yep. Sit down and take 5 minutes to just breathe. I promise your entire life will change from implementing this one tactic. Your heart rate will be calmer. Your thoughts will be clearer. You will feel less rushed. You will be recharged.
Today is now Day 6 of 30 Days of Outfits! This series has been so much fun to put together. Today I am sharing the cutest travel look. Bosidu sent me this adorable striped bag that has so many compartments! I love the design and the quality and they are giving you guys 20% off using this link. This makes a perfect last-minute gift for your travel companion. I paired it with these adorable capri pants that are the perfect length for even short legs like mine! They come in a variety of colors but this canyon pink had me at hello. I paired it with more stripes and then added blush sneakers to elongate my legs. Since I’m only 5’0 I use all the tricks! You can shop the whole look here and browse the other 30 Days of Outfits here!
Today I’m sharing a pretty laid-back look for Day 5 of 30 Days of Outfits! I love this pinstripe blouse paired with a cropped tank. I wore it a few days ago in this post with a skirt but wanted to show you another option for both tops. I love the detail on the sleeves of the overshirt. I added a pair of flared jeans and then wore the same pointy black pumps seen in yesterday’s post. When you are wearing flared pants look for a slender or pointy-toe shoe. It elongates the legs and gives it a chic feel! Finally, I added my favorite baguette from Ewelyni (use code THREEHEELCLICKS50 for 50% off your first order).
I cannot believe it’s been a full year since I partnered with Sarah Flint! I am so honored to be a part of the Ambassador team! Not only has Sarah Flint created a brand that has incredible quality, craftsmanship, and direct-to-you prices - the brand is female-owned and empowers women every day to feel luxurious. I have several pairs of Sarah Flint heels, pumps, sandals, and shoes because they are so incredibly comfortable. The Sacchetto Flats are my all-time favorite flat for comfort and style
I’ve been told my whole life I needed to slow down. A life of 12 cities in my first 17 years as a military brat conditioned me to feel like I always had to keep moving. I kept up that pattern in my 20’s and 30’s.
It didn’t matter where I lived, the maximum I could stay anywhere was 2 years before feeling like I needed to switch… switched companies I worked for, switch positions, switch challenges, switch homes…
Some of you experienced a life of constant movement and chaos. You know the feeling I’m describing. It was a need to constantly take on something more because I felt empty. And I longed to feel at home… but nothing was home. It felt like each job, location, and each overcome challenge felt like I was putting clothes on that weren’t me.
The mind can be a battlefield. If you’ve ever experienced a panic attack you know firsthand what mental hell is like. In my late twenties and early thirties, I had panic attacks all the time. I mean on the daily and oftentimes multiple times a day. I would freeze and feel like I couldn’t drive my car. I didn’t want to go very many places for fear of getting overstimulated. Being extroverted this felt really difficult. I was torn between what my soul and body wanted to do every day. I needed to bring my body out of fight or flight but being stuck at home to do so in a calm environment was torture in itself because then I was alone with my thoughts. Over time I would get therapy and begin working on training my brain to focus on new things. I would learn different coping techniques that were not full proof but would oftentimes get the job done. It took work. Each day I’d start going down the same worry wormholes and I’d spend time and energy pulling myself out. I figured some of you might be dealing with this, too. Here are three coping tools you can use when you go down a negative mental path:
Time is precious. It’s the one form of currency we cannot get back. Over the past few years, I’ve grown to be more and more intentional with how I spend my time. Taking out and saying no to activities that are energy draining. Spending time doing the things that bring me joy. Intentionally carving out special moments with people I love and care about. As I’ve done this day after day I realize most days I am living a dream I had years ago. Back in 2017, I went through a period of life that was incredibly trying. During that time I remember having a vision where I spent my time as much as possible in nature and traveling to see things I love. It was a peaceful vision. I’m happy to report that five years later much of my free time is spent doing just that. If you want your life to change, start taking small daily steps towards that life. Here are ways to build your dream life every day.
I’m on a yellow kick lately. There’s something so bright and cheerful about daffodil and marigold shades of yellow I’ve had it on constant rotation. I recently share this yellow maxi dress and this adorable top with you guys! Today’s it’s all about the gorgeous cabana stripes on this Caroline Constas top. Statement tops are perfect for resort wear styles and vacation. This same top would look adorable with a midi or maxi skirt, a pair of skinny jeans or linen pants. Dressed up or dressed down it’s dramatic and flattering. I decided to wear it with a pair of cropped pants I picked up from Amazon the Drop and pops of white accessories. Although this top is more of an investment piece, I rounded up a few under $100 below for you to shop! To top things off I added a little gold jewelry and a bright yellow satchel I’ve had for years!
Let’s chat about all things Spring now. Over the next few weeks, I begin rotating out all of my cold weather clothes and put my Spring things front and center. I usually gravitate to a few color palettes - nudes with whites, pastels, and cherry red. Depending on my mood, I’ll dress accordingly. Having a few classic accessories like a basket bag, gold jewelry, and scarves make endless options for your favorite pieces. The switch of a bag and the addition of earrings can make any outfit come to life. Also, a pretty statement necklace pops on web meetings! I love being able to show up in real life or on camera with a little color on. It draws people’s eyes to pay better attention to what I’m saying. Below are over 100 spring accessories for you to shop! Let me know which ones are your favorites in the comments!
With Spring Break happening over the next month, I thought it was the perfect time to share a few Resort Wear picks! I love being able to get away even if it’s just for a few days this time of year. The weather is mild compared to the past few months and it’s so fun to get to visit the beach, a lake, or just get outdoors more! Jill by Jill Stuart makes some of the most beautifully cut dresses. This one is cut on the bias which gives the skirt a free-flowing shape. You find similar options here and here! I paired it today with my favorite nude pumps and a simple nude clutch. When I’m on holiday I like to bring the smallest clutch possible to dinner. No one wants to lug around a mommy purse in a dress like this! I added touches of gold jewelry and a medallion statement necklace for the final touches! See below for all my favorite resort wear picks! Also, where are you heading for Spring Break? Staycation, beach, mountains, or just a normal week? Also, don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter and win a free Younique MOODSTRUCK EPIC 4D Mascara!
A few years ago whenever I looked in the mirror I saw someone who was a failure. I talked to her that way, too. I’d say things like, “You are not getting things right today.” Or “This isn’t your day.”
I began avoiding mirrors. I saw every single flaw in myself every single day. Then, one day a mentor of mine told me to say one positive thing for every negative thing I said.
Looking back, what I was going through was depression. I was so tired every day. I was angry at how life turned out and I felt like everything was my fault. Depression is a lot of work to manage. It’s a level of fatigue that makes taking a shower feel like an Olympic sport. But I kept going. Each time I said something crappy to myself, I stop and say something positive.
My daughter and I headed out last night for a girl’s night complete with a trip to Hey Sugar and then crepes from our favorite place in town called Sweet Paris. We love coming to this little area in town. The candy store carries almost everyone treats you could possibly imagine and they even have gelato! I thought it would make the perfect background to share this colorful striped shirtdress. A classic shirt dress is one of the best pieces you can invest in for Spring. This dress would be perfect for a baby or bridal shower, a daytime wedding, brunch with the girls, and even a picnic. It has just the perfect amount of volume and is cropped to show off whatever shoes you fancy. I decided to pull out my new Sarah Flint perfect 85 pumps in a classic nude. These pumps are made to walk in all day with tons of cushion and a reinforced heel.
Gosh, I love the ocean. I have to say out of all of the places I lived and visited in my lifetime, I feel most at home when I’m near the ocean. There’s something so soothing and powerful about the water. The waves hold so much force as they push and pull against the grains of sand on the shore. Soft powdery sand that feels like you walking on powdered sugar makes for the best walks. The sunsets are unbelievable and when a storm rolls in…well, as frightening as they are - they also carry so much strength. Today I’m going to share a whole bunch of date ideas, but if you are single… I want you to know it’s okay to do any (or all of these) activities by yourself and show yourself some love. I say that because some of my best memories of my happy place were spent in times of solitude. Valentine’s Day whether you’re in a relationship or not is a day to celebrate love. A day to bring forth self-love and care if you are single. Here’s a word for all the single ladies on valentine’s day if you are looking for some ideas on how to spend your time! Highly recommend some of the tips here! If you are in a couple, I challenge you to take time over the next week to figure out a way to show your partner that you adore them. Brainstorm a few ideas and make the event special. The effort will be worth it!
I cannot tell you just how excited I am that it’s finally sweater season here in Texas. For those of you who live in more pleasing Fall climates, we do not experience a drop in temperatures until late October/early November. About halfway through Fall I am finally able to pull out my favorite items like knee-high boots, cozy jackets, and of course, sweaters. I recently did a complete overhaul of my wardrobe. I weeded out all of the items that really didn’t suit me and decided to bring in some amazing new favorites. This grey and white sweater isat the top of my list! I love it! I also love that it’s on SALE FOR $15 and comes in a variety of colors. The relaxed fit hits at the perfect level on the waist and it has a beautiful neckline that doesn’t look frumpy or overwhelming on my petite frame. I give it a 10/10 and it would make the PERFECT Christmas gift! Shop a bunch of my favorite sweater picks below!
Over the past week, I took myself on a little journey across the South. I decided to start in Mississippi and travel down to the Florida coast and then back through New Orleans making a loop home. When I arrived at the coast I immediately encountered a series of thunderstorms. It definitely was a challenge for me to photograph and spend time at the beach due to intermittent raining and required an immense amount of flexibility in my day. I am a planner but you can’t always plan everything. Life is dynamic. In fact, some would say that life is constantly changing and nothing remains the same. I’ve found the thunderstorms bring the prettiest sunsets and rainbows. I think that’s true for life, too. There’s no such thing as only experiencing “good.” You have to have the lows for growth and to appreciate the highs. Without rain there is no rainbow.
Memorial Day Weekend is forever the milestone to kick off summer. Yes, it’s day of honor and rememberance for those who have fought and fallen for our country. It’s also the end of the school year and the start to summer vacation. Iced coffee, sorbet, and gelato, days on the lake, and a long list of summer bucket activities are now the agenda. So much ahead this summer compared to last year’s lockdown. I’m excited about the upcoming months and changes life will offer as I shed things that no longer serve my life and make room for more creativity, joy, and freedom.
Ever since the pandemic hit, athleisure has made it’s way into my regular everyday wardrobe. As more and more places are opening up we are all itching to get out of our homes. Although I still practice social distancing, I do find myself getting into “real clothes” these days. Matching sets, rugby shirts, pastel hued yoga pants, baseball caps and other athleisure items are at the top of my list when I get dressed in the mornings. Even on web calls, you’ll oftentimes find me wearing yoga pants. I like to be put together and comfy. Today I’m sharing a few tips for wearing athleisure without looking frumpy!
Confession: I’m a total outdoors gal. You might not expect me to say that being how much I love getting dolled up, but when I’m in nature I’m at home. From sunny days to trips to the beach to aggressive hikes in the mountains… I love it all. When given the option to work out at the gym or outdoors, you’ll find me jogging outside any day. Being that I love time outdoors means a lot of exposure to the sun. With the sun comes wrinkles if I leave my skin unprotected. These days more than ever I find myself being diligent about taking care of my skin and wearing a product with SPF daily is now built into my morning routine.
I recently shared this topic on a Facebook live for International Women’s Day and thought about how impactful the advice I would give to my younger self may have on others! Although there are many things I wish I knew at an earlier age but looking back the biggest thing I would have changed was learning to trust my gut. To just block out all of the white noise around me and listen to my inner voice. I also wish I had implemented a skincare regimen much earlier and taken better care of things like my teeth. But as we all live and learn, the list of self advice continues to grow. Here are five things I wish I could tell my 20-year-old self:
Every year my daughter and I decorate gingerbread houses. We’ve been doing this since she was five and it’s become a really fun tradition over the years. Most years we use a gingerbread kit. To date my favorite one came from Sprout’s which you can see in this previous post where we also mad our own wrapping paper for the season. This year I went ahead and braved doing one from scratch. Although it ended up being a little wompy the memories of making it will forever reside in my heart. Sometimes it’s not about being perfect it’s about the process.
Being located in Texas means our holiday season doesn’t stay cold for very long. Our temperatures are ranging from 50’s to 80’s right now and so pulling out tons of Winter layers isn’t the most practical. As Christmas and the holidays are quickly approaching I like dressing in festive textures with sequins and sparkles and I love incorporating reds and greens during this time. Here are a few ways to incorporate more holiday styles into a southern wardrobe while the weather is still feeling like Spring and Summer.
