Yep, it’s about that season… wedding season. I may not be an expert bridesmaid, but I am an expert plus one when it comes to weddings. I cannot tell you how many weddings I’ve attended as a date or plus one. I’ve sat on a white chair in the middle of blazing August on a Texas farm and visited a planned wedding in Vegas. If there's one thing I’ve learned about weddings is that comfort matters. When you think about it, it’s one of the few times in life you are stuck for hours on end and can’t exactly run home to throw on sweatpants. You’re oftentimes in the middle of heated climates and would love nothing more than to run around in your swimsuit or underwear. Well, do as your heart wishes, but that’s not going to fly with most of the guests. Today I’m giving you all the skinny on how to survive those pesky spring and summer weddings.

Choose the Midi Skirt Length

The midi skirt is the middle child of hem lengths and completely under rated. Dior made it so popular in the early half of the twentieth century with cinched waists and beautiful heels. I prefer a knee length or midi skirt if I am sitting for any length of time. It’s more comfortable, roomy, and allows me not to contantly fidget for fear of flashing my neighbors.A midi length also allows for a shoe change from heels to flats or vice versa with little worry. Side bonus is no one over the age of 40 will be whispering to themselves your skirt is too short. In fact, you’ll probably receive compliments from the golden year guests.

Be practical with accessories

If you know you are attending an outdoor wedding then make sure you bring sunglasses, a hat or umbrella and a handkerchief. All necessities. Selecting accessories should be a compliment to your outfit both on an aesthetic and a practical side. A simple boater goes elegantly with most summer dresses or grab a pair of cat eye sunglasses. If you know you get chilly, bring a scarf or shawl in place of a plain jacket.

If the shoe fits… then wear it

There’s not much worse than walking across a lawn and finding your kitten heels sinking into the brown mud of the earth. Making sure you choose a shoe that looks good but also functions for the occasion is the difference of being awkward or joyful throughout the events. If I’m dancing or standing I opt for a wedge or block heel so my feet don’t ache all evening. If I’m outdoors then a wedge or flat is my go to choice for footwear. Also, if you are trying a new pair out - bring backup flats and a bag large enough to tote your shoes if you decide you are in discomfort. I HATE having a pair of shoes ruin a good time.
